MANY teens in Bulawayo are infamous for their endless wild Vuzu parties that are held every time they get an inch of freedom.
In a sea of outgoing teens one Bruce Mutero (18) is defying odds as he spends most of his time writing and directing plays.
Already with a play to his name , titled My first day at College Mutero is yet to be fully unpacked as he claims more plays to his name are yet to grace the stage.
“I have more plays that I have written. I am just looking for sponsorship to make them come into life,” said the optimistic playwriter.
Despite finishing his O-level last year, Mutero, already with a 22-member cast has a vision of how his first day at college is going to be.
Mutero traces his dream of staging plays on the big stage since he was in Grade Three at Insukamini Primary School in Mabutweni, only to find his feet when he auditioned for a lead drama role when he was doing Form Three.
Raised in Bulawayo’s Mpopoma no doubt Mutereko is inspired by the likes of Raisedon Baya and Memory Kumbota.
“Most of my plays are inspired by situations that I come across in life. Like for example a scenario of a picture of people vending fruits inspires me to come up with a play aligned to the predicaments that they go through on daily basis.
“Of course they are heavy weights in the theatre fraternity that inspire and motivate me to work even harder like Raisedon Baya and Memory Kumbota,” he said.
At such a tender age, Mutereko highlighted that he had a hard time convincing his parents to support him until they watched his first play My first day at College.
Mutereko hopes the corporate world will be kind to sponsor his works.
