BEFORE I get into this week’s article, I would like to share one of my worst experiences from this past week.
The weather is surely unpredictable and it leads people to do some of the most preposterous things.

Just last Thursday I had an awful experience, on my way to work, aboard a lift, where I don’t really know whether it was the driver of the vehicle who stank or his friend seated on the passenger side, they seemed comfortable with the smell in the car, as the windows tightly rolled up.

Of course the weather was nippy and all I wanted was to keep myself warm until I got to the office.

Unfortunately my bid to keep warm was cut short, as the stench in the car was extremely awful, unbearable (believe me the car reeked and I almost threw up) and I was left with no option but to roll the window down.

I wondered to myself if either of the two were not aware that the car had a terrible stench or not.

My guess was that both of them hadn’t bathed in the morning and couldn’t care less about what the other passengers thought.

Gosh, what ever happened to self-pride and dignity? Even if the temperatures are low, let’s all take at least five minutes of our time in the morning to bath.

Anyway on to this week’s topic — Fusion Fashion Show, a taste of what’s to come . . .
I had the opportunity to attend the fashion show, which was held at an upmarket restaurant in Bulawayo last Saturday. The show had been organised by the recently established Bulawayo Board of Designers in partnership with other fashion stakeholders in the city.

The show, basically a preview or a glimpse of what fashion designers had in-store for Bulawayo and perhaps the country at large. The show was also a pre-launch party for BBD.

I had the opportunity to talk to one of the organisers of the event, Annie Maliki — who is part of BBD and also happens to be a designer.

She said as the board they had come up with an idea to hold such fashion shows to get the city aware of their presence and to create awareness that the industry was being revived.

“We partnered up with the Posh and African Buzz for the show. These are new companies setting up in Bulawayo focusing on make-up and modeling. We did the castings together and there are a total of 11 designers who showcased their designs,” she said on the sidelines of the show.

Normally the response to fashion shows in Bulawayo is not so good but for this particular show I was really impressed with the attendance. The venue was almost full to capacity, well that is to say the apportioned section of the establishment.

“The attendance is spectacular and really impressive, the tickets almost sold out and people were really curious to know what exactly was going on. However, I would note that people are still confused about the concept of being a designer, we still have a long way in getting people to appreciate the role of designers and getting the fashion industry back on track,” said Annie, who possesses a captivating and gorgeous smile.

The reason why they named the event Fusion Fashion Show was that it was a fusion or collaboration of different designers, showcasing different items, such as clothes, jewellery and accessories.

“This is just a glimpse of what is to come, we have various designers on board and we are confident that we will be victorious in our endevour to re-awaken the industry in Bulawayo. We are yet to host more shows and there are a lot of other projects we will be undertaking,” she said.

The show, in a nutshell, was simply fabulous and mesmerising. It’s just so ironic how I had a pep talk with a couple of designers last year, after having written an article to get them to shake up and stop relying on other people and form their own board to get things done, that the initiative has begun is yielding results.

Feedback:
Wow your articles are explosive. I hope you will write about face management during winter. I don’t want my skin to be chapped, due to un-moisturising.  — Sthoe Palesa.
