THE Zimbabwe Football Association will this week hold interviews for the post of technical director after the football body fired Nelson Matongorere over allegations of impropriety in January.
Several people have reportedly applied for the job but according to sources, Zifa staffer Mike Ngore is reportedly leading the race to land the job.

Zifa flighted adverts in newspapers last weekend with the closing date for applications being 17 April.

Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela said the successful candidate will start work on 1 May.

“We have not had a technical director since Matongorere was relieved of his duties and as you are aware it is a critical post that we need to fill and interviews will be done this week,” he said.

Sources said Ngore was already in the system and this gave him an advantage while other names that have popped up include former Zifa board member competitions Benedict Moyo, High Performance Technical Committee member and coaching instructor Gibson Homela, former Mighty Warriors technical advisor Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe and Caps United coach Taurai Mangwiro.

Zifa has, however, imposed age restriction of between 30 and 50 years that might see Moyo and Homela fall by the way side although they both have vast experience which makes them suitable candidates for the post.

“Ngore could make it because he is already within Zifa but Mangwiro also has a strong chance,” said the source.

According to the advertisement placed by Zifa, the prospective technical director should have five years experience in coaching or sports management and should hold at least a sports related diploma.

The technical director would be responsible for programme formulation, implementation and co-ordination, working closely with Zifa board member for development John Phiri.

He would also be in charge of football development from grassroots across the country, establish talent identification platforms and junior structures and create schools of excellence.

Another critical role is the training and grading of coaches and he will also monitor and regularise the activities of referees and sports medics.

Matongorere was suspended in September last year before being fired in January after being found guilty of improper conduct for illegally voting in the world coach and player awards last year. He was also accused of having a hand in the disappearance of Caf C licence certificates.

The certificates reportedly arrived at Zifa but disappeared immediately afterwards and initially a cleaner was said to have put them in the rubbish bin although the explanation could not be verified.

Matongorere, who is the highest qualified Zimbabwean coach is a Uefa A badge holder and was once attached to Arsenal and Borrusia Dortmund.

He, however, still remains a Fifa/CAF instructor and trains coaches around Africa.
