The Government should channel more resources towards capacitating its agricultural institutions since the country’s economy is largely agro-based, an official said.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony at Esigodini Agricultural College last Friday, the guest of honour and Matabeleland North provincial head of the Department of Veterinary Services, Dr Polex Moyo, said Zimbabwe had an agro economy hence there was a need for the country to realise its agricultural potential through effective use of graduates from institutions such as Esigodini Agricultural College.

The event was held under the theme, “Linking agriculture with technology”.

“Training of agricultural experts is very important for the country as we have dedicated a large part of our economy to agriculture hence it’s an effort that contributes to ensuring the investment retains optimum yield. Not to mention it is in line with various Government policies and achieves the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation objectives,” Dr Moyo said.

He said it was important for agricultural institutions to be equipped with modern technology to keep abreast with the rest of the world in using efficient and reliable methods to enhance production.

“Times are moving and technology is advancing thus information that was most effective and relevant a decade ago is much more advanced in the present day hence we encourage teachers from this institution to undergo further training ensuring they are kept up to date,” Dr Moyo said.

He said the graduates should prepare for life after college through being innovative as job opportunities in the country were limited.

“As we all know, job availability is a major problem in the country and instead of complaining, graduates should learn to live on their acquired skills.  The industry will do with more young blood, who have a better understanding of technology, young men and women who are more than ready to take agriculture to greater heights,” Dr Moyo said.
