BAMBELELA Arts Ensemble return to the theatre stage, with the play The Wish List after a two-year hiatus that last saw them showcase The Civil Servant in 2014.

Growing calls from theatre fans saw the outfit come up with the production that will be staged on 6 May at the Bulawayo Theatre.

The Wish List, written by Raisedon Baya and directed by Khumbulani Mathe, tackles marital problems, highlighting how “seeking adventure can destroy blissful relationships”.

Bambelela’s director, Witness Tavarwisa said they have been focusing on commissioned works in the past two years.

“Our audiences have been making a call for us to do public performances. Since 2014 we have been doing commissioned performance were we perform at hired wedding and events. Because of this outcry, we decided to have a theatre play which we believe is very educative in nature at the same time will entertain our audience,” he added.

The story is centered on a young woman who is married to a very good, honourable and loving man. The man is “too good to a point of boring” and the woman complains to her friends and relatives about him.

The woman tells everyone that her husband is boring, he is not adventurous, does not cheat, beat her up and is very predictable. She wants adventure, in search of that adventure she becomes involved with another man and when the husband finds out all hell breaks loose.

The real secrets she had been hiding are revealed. The husband begins to drink, abuse her physical, emotionally, verbally and economically. She tries to run away but the relatives don’t want to hear about it.

Tavarwisa said the play aims to educate especially married people on how to be content with what they have.

“The themes that are brought about in the play are faithfulness, loyalty and appreciation among a lot others. The play seeks to educate people on being content with what they have and also faithfulness in the marriage institute considering that divorce cases are very high in the country,” said Tavarwisa.

He said the play is educating, inspiring, entertaining and totally composed quality and theatre in equal measure and will see seasoned actors taking part in the play.

“The play has a cast of five people including actors that have over two decades of experience in the arts field ensuring they bring out the best entertaining and educating performance. The actors are Josphat Ndlovu, Leonard Phiri, Nomvuyiso Mpofu, Bongelani Ncube and Patience Sibanda,” he said.

Bambelela arts ensemble was established in 1992 with the aim of addressing social issues that people were facing at that time using theatre as a vehicle of social change and transformation.

The group has made regional tours as they have performed in Botswana’s Dzalobana International Festival, Sadc international festival in Pretoria and Link Festival in Limpopo South Africa.

Locally, the group has made a name for itself as it has won accolades in arts completions and participated in big festivals such as Intwasa and Ibumba.
