THE fight for top eight positions in the Zifa Southern Region Division One intensifies this weekend with four places still up for grabs for a team to be eligible for the inaugural John Landa Liquor Hub Super 8 Cup as the halfway mark in the league beckons.

Southern Region president Musa Mandaza said the dates for the tourney would be set on 13 August when the draw would be held at the mid-year extraordinary general meeting. Mandaza said they were giving Bulawayo Chiefs time to catch up with the other teams before holding the draw as they want to ensure all teams would have played 15 games by the time of the draw.

Although they have played 12 games, Chiefs are fourth on the log having amassed 27 points, which guarantees them a place in the tourney.

The top four teams, Bantu Rovers, Amagagasi, ZPC Hwange and Chiefs respectively have all but secured their places in the inaugural John Landa Cup.

On fifth position is Black Boots with 21 points and have one more game to add on to their tally before they reach the 15-game and will face Technosphere this afternoon in Hwange.

The Hwange-based side is sixth with 19 points and their battle against Black Boots will be the biggest battle for the top eight although they (Technosphere) have so far played 13 games and will get another opportunity to rake in more points.

ZRP Bulawayo Province (18 points) was scheduled to slug it against eighth placed Victoria Falls Tigers (17 points) yesterday afternoon and with the two sides being separated by a point, the match was set to provide another great duel.

Casmyn and Ntabazinduna, both on 14 points, can also sneak into the top eight as they have two outstanding games before they reach the 15-game mark but they have tough battles ahead of them with the former set to play Bulawayo Chiefs on Wednesday while the latter plays Tigers on the same day.
