NATIONAL Assembly member for Nkulumane Cde Killian Sibanda on Wednesday donated an assortment of goods to women in his constituency who completed vocational training and urged them to start self-help projects to fight poverty.

Cde Sibanda donated 120kgs of peanuts, 100kgs of sugar, 60kgs of baking flour, 60 hair pieces and 14 crates of tomatoes to the women who had finished short courses in bakery, home décor and hairdressing as part of inputs at Sizinda Vocational Training Centre.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony at Pastila Disciples of Fellowship Church, Cde Sibanda said the courses were one of the many ways of empowering women and eradicating poverty among Zimbabweans.

“This is a project that seeks to empower women. We have realised that women are the ones who are holding families together and everything they do benefits the whole family, so by these donations we are hoping to eradicate poverty starting right at family level,” he said.

He urged the graduates to go and start their own businesses with the start-up inputs that he had provided.

“I urge you to group yourselves and start your own businesses. The problem with our people is that they want to spend their first profit, please take these inputs and use them to start your businesses. Get your business stable first before looking at spending the profit,” he said.

One of the graduating students, Mrs Concilia Dube said she was pleased with the way Cde Sibanda was taking care of the community.

“I am looking forward to having my own business and getting out of this poverty. I would say we are very lucky because we have someone who is looking after us,” said Mrs Dube.

One of the parents whose child graduated who identified herself as MaKhumalo said, “I am really grateful because I had lost hope in my son, Ndumiso Khumalo. He has been failing at school but now I am hopeful that through this project he is going to start his own business or find employment.”

About 500 women have graduated from the Sizinda Vacation Training Centre since its inception and have taken up projects while 1 200 youths have also graduated and have been employed at various places.
