SWIMMING enthusiasts in Mzilikazi suburb have every reason to celebrate as the once desolate Barbourfields Swimming Pool is under renovation thanks to a partnership between supermarket chain Choppies and Sanctifyd Recreation.
Sanctifyd Recreation specialises in sports and recreation and this is their second project as they are also involved in the renovation of Centenary Park playground under the theme “Stop vandalism, theft and graffiti”.

Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo bemoaned the rampart vandalism in the city with street lights and road signs being the most affected.

“We commend corporate companies that come together to stage such a remarkable initiative and add emphasis to the community members of Ward 8 to safeguard their infrastructure and report any signs of vandalism, theft and graffiti as these are elements that promote underdevelopment,” he said.

Clr Moyo commended the renovation of BF pool saying it will benefit the community of Bulawayo at large as it will decongest available swimming pools in the city with children engaging in recreational activities.

Nkululeko Ncube, director of Sanctifyd Recreation said  Choppies, had availed a substantial amount to them for the resuscitation of the BF pool.

“I am not at liberty to disclose the amount they sponsored us with but we are grateful for their support for this investment as this will go a long way and will benefit the unborn if the site is maintained well,” he said.

“We want to educate communities on the importance of community property and safeguarding it but we need more companies to step in and take charge of social responsibility initiatives. However, it would be easier if they adopt a school.”

Ncube said that they would set up a swimming academy and had already targeted schools within the vicinity that will benefit from the programme.

“This is a programme for children who cannot afford private swimming lessons and the academy will have a trainer who will assist children in swimming lessons,” he said.

Schools set to benefit are Lotshe, Lobengula, Mzilikazi, Mckeurtan, Robert Tredgold, St Patricks and Ross Camp primary schools as they target the junior schools for a grassroots programme.
