ONE of Bulawayo’s prolific imbube groups — Black Umfolosi has released a live DVD recording titled Black Umfolosi Concert, which features other local upcoming groups. The DVD was recorded at the National Art gallery in Bulawayo in August and features captivating performances by Black Umfolosi and upcoming Afro Jazz musicians such as Thandy Dlana, Xolani “Ex Mile” Ndlovu.

The producer of the DVD, Jimmy Dube said the recording had been done as a way of fund-raising for the Canada tour.

“This was a fund-raising project for the group’s Canada tour. However, the group has already left Zimbabwe for Canada and it is now just a regular DVD to entertain their fans.

“It was also a way of giving some upcoming acts a platform to showcase what they are capable of doing. However, after the concert the group decided that it would be better if they launched the DVD, after seeing the number of artistes and the crowd of Bulawayo which came to support them,” he said.

Dube said he would be collaborating with Black Umfolosi in the future to produce more live DVDs, as well as working with other artistes.

“We will be working on more projects as soon as the group returns from their tour. Together with the group we plan on establishing a platform to nurture and promote other local artistes,” he said.

Dube mentioned that the DVD would be available at selected shops in the city, and would also be available at the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo.

Black Umfolosi rose to fame, after they released the track Unity soon after the signing of the Unity Accord in 1987 between Zanu-PF and PF- Zapu.

The group has extensively toured the US, Europe, Canada, Australia and Asia. It has also represented Zimbabwe at international events, such as the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.

The group, which comprises six members, will be touring Canada for a month, where they will be performing at various festivals across that country.

The tour will include concerts in Edmonton, Kensington, Toronto and Winnipeg.
