BULAWAYO Motoring Club staged their third leg of the National Championship which is the penultimate of the national series at the Victoria Falls Road Circuit yesterday.
The event featured 14 races namely the Ultimate Street Cars, National Sports Cars, National Superbikes, National Saloon Cars, National Megelli, Ultimate Street Car, Megelli, Superbike Series and national cars as well as the Toyota main race and National Megelli Motorcycles.

Sadly, in the Superbike race, Bulawayo’s Tim Schultz got off circuit on a curve and was thrown against a tree resulting in an alleged lung and back injury and was ferried to Mater Dei Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

South African IT specialist Patrick Furby who was the clerk of course said that motor sport in Zimbabwe had become a growing norm and people were enthusiastic and had positively embraced the new genre of sport.

“I have been in the motoring industry for 20 years now and we have been engaging on training and implementing safety in the motoring industry,” he said.

“It is touching what Schultz experienced but injuries are part of motoring hence it should be noted that safety comes first and is a priority we focus on,” said Furby.

The event was held in honour of 1960 and 1970’s motoring legend Peter Parnell who was an outstanding driver in the country and the region and it was dubbed the Peter Parnell Trophy, with the winner of the 10 lap Toyota race receiving the trophy.

The event featured national drivers and riders who had the opportunity to gain or close up as many points as possible as the season drew closer and there was a tight points difference among the Super Bike Series riders’ top contenders with Phil Archenoul from Harare maintaining pole position.
