HIGHLANDERS FC chapters have refuted claims by aspiring secretary general, Nkululeko Ndlovu that they support his candidature revealing they are still to make decisions on whom to back in the club’s elections scheduled for 4 February.

The elections will see members voting for chairman, secretary-general and committee member after the expiry of the incumbents’ terms. Ndlovu was quoted in our sister paper, Chronicle on Wednesday making a blanket statement that Highlanders chapters are behind him.

“So far chapters are in total support of my candidature which is encouraging . . . ,” he was quoted saying.

However, chapters chairpersons we spoke to said they have not endorsed Ndlovu.

Victoria Falls chapter chairman, Morgen Dube came close to calling Ndlovu desperate by making unsubstantiated claims, which he hopes can buttress his political campaign.

“I find it disrespectful and malicious for a fellow club member to assume and claim that chapters have endorsed their candidature without even talking to our chapter leadership. The Vic Falls chapter is organised and principled and will not be dragged into cheap football campaigns by desperate candidates. We want what is best for Highlanders and liars are not one of them,” he said.

Harare chapter acting chairman, Derrick “Gijima” Ncube said they are yet to meet any of the candidates hence they are not backing anyone at this stage.

“We haven’t met any of the candidates so we cannot back anyone. As a chapter, we want people who are knowledgeable in the game and not just dealers masquerading as football administrators like what we have seen in the recent past.

“We need people who have Bosso at heart and someone who can add value to the Bosso brand. We have gone for long with nothing to show yet every year people scramble to be part of the Highlanders executive. What is attracting them to these posts? he said.

Gwanda chapter chairman, Ronnie Sibanda said he was not aware of any official position taken by his grouping to support Ndlovu, the SG hopeful may have been talking about some chapter other than Gwanda.

“He did not mention the chapters in that article, maybe he meant other chapters, as for Gwanda we have not told him or anyone that we support Ndlovu or maybe there are some Gwanda chapter members who support him so he assumes he has the support of the whole chapter.

“We are open to meeting prospective candidates, those who want to come to Gwanda can come engage us. We are all Highlanders and I believe we all seek the success of the club,” he said.

Filabusi chapter vice-chairman, Robert Ndlovu said they are still looking forward to engaging the candidates and cannot back someone they know little about.

“We don’t know much about Ndlovu, as such we cannot be backing him but we are willing to engage him and find out who he is and what he is offering Bosso,” he said.

Ndlovu however, said he meant he has the support of some members within the chapters.

“I do not think it will be possible for a whole chapter to agree on who to support but inevitably individual members make their own choices,” he said.
