THE Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board has embarked on a recruitment drive of judges as well as referees to beef up officials as they set the sport on a revival path.

Years of inactivity in the sport has seen the number of judges go down and training courses are set to be held countrywide that will see judges and referees being trained. ZNBCB president, Richard Hondo said they called a meeting of judges and referees but less than five turned up forcing them to come up with a strategy to recruit more officials.

He said the training was open to all those interested in being part of the sport, male and female.

“We have not had much activity over the past five years and during that period I think officials we had lost interest, while some could have retired and some could have passed on but there were no programmes to enlist the services of new officials. We cannot move on without these two important officials. Anyone interested in the sport is welcome to join us and assist us revive boxing,” said Hondo.

He said training will be for free and they are encouraging both men and women to be part of the new officials handling matches.

Hondo said they had enlisted their officials in various provinces to handle the recruitment and training of the new officials.

“We want as many people as possible to come on board and work with us hence we have spread the recruitment countrywide to ensure no one interested is left out,” he said.

In another development, Hondo said they have identified a general secretary to head the administration of the board. ZNBCB decided to recruit a fulltime secretariat to ensure the smooth running of their affairs which had been hamstrung by lack of administration staff.

“She is employed somewhere so she has given notice so at the moment I can’t name her but we are happy we have concluded that part and we are now looking at other aspects of the sport. We believe she will do her job well and have confidence in her abilities,” said Hondo.

Meanwhile, Hondo said they are looking forward to the hosting of the “Harare Geddon” Boxing Fest scheduled for 25 August in the capital.

The bill is a collaboration between South African-based Kalakoda Boxing Promotions and broadcaster, Kwese Sports.
