BULAWAYO will tomorrow come alive when the country’s tennis budding players converge for the Bulawayo Open National Junior Championship which will end on 8 April.
Subsequently after the championship there will be the sixth edition of the Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Memorial tournament which will run from 9-11 April.

Competitions director Raggs Chikunichawa said all is set for the competitions and it is likely that more than a hundred players will be at both events.

“Registration closed yesterday, however, we look forward to an exhilarating performance from our local players ahead of the competitions,” he said.

Chikunichawa further added that games will be played at Bulawayo Athletics Club, Girls College and Whitestone.
“The competition is used in ranking of players nationally hence it is mandatory for them to feature in as many tournaments as possible so that their ranking might increase,” he said.

The De Souza tournament was in 2010 turned into a national event in memory of one of the best players to emerge from Bulawayo who died in 2009 due to heart failure. Bulawayo favourite Tanaka Chabati is the defending champion in the U-18 boys Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Memorial tournament and will put up a fight to retain the title this year around.

The two tournaments are big events on the tennis calendar and attract competitors from all the country’s provinces.
