THE Bulawayo United Residents Association (BURA) has said the initiative to raise $200 000 for the construction of a perimeter wall at Mpilo Central Hospital is not politically motivated but only a means by residents to contribute towards the upkeep of the hospital.

In an interview with Sunday News, BURA chairperson Mr Winos Dube said they had received a number of reports where people were being encouraged not to participate as this was said to be a politically influenced project.

He said this was the unfortunate works of BURA detractors who did not have the city at heart.
“Just last week, I met a certain Member of the National Assembly in the city who said they had decided not to participate in the project because this was an alleged Zanu PF project, which is not true.

“This is just us as Bulawayo residents coming together and helping in the refurbishment of our hospital. We must not forget that this is not an MDC-T, Zanu PF or MDC hospital, this hospital is there to serve everyone,” said Mr Dube.

He said it was unfortunate that some people were working against the initiative and did not want to chip in towards the improvement of the hospital.

“This is our hospital and we saw the need for us to do something for it because all things being fair, it won’t be sincere for us to watch as such an institution crumbles. My call is that we unite as people from Bulawayo and not allow mere politics to divide us.

“Further, no-one is being forced to contribute. We are simply saying anyone interested must donate to the cause voluntarily,” said the BURA chairperson.

Meanwhile, Mr Dube revealed that they had since distributed 1 100 donation forms, with each form having 100 bricks which translates to $100; each brick is worth a dollar.

He said they were now also approaching churches to help rally their congregants to contribute what they could towards the initiative.

“It is a very slow process but we are patient and very confident that we will reach our target of $200 000. Yesterday (Monday) I checked our account and we had $796. What we are saying is that those who collect the forms must strive to sell all the bricks, that way I am sure we can reach our target.

“We also have weekly review meetings where we assess progress to date and plan our next move. We are insisting on transparency because that is the only way people can be confident about this noble move,” he said.

He encouraged those that had collected the donation forms to continue approaching residents in the city with the hope of raising the required amount as soon as possible.
