PREPARATIONS for the inaugural Basketball Union of Zimbabwe awards are under way with the association having set next Saturday as the official day for the ceremony. Joe Mujuru, the BUZ secretary general, said they were yet to come up with the venue and time as they were still waiting for a few confirmations from potential sponsors. However, he said indications were that the awards ceremony would go ahead as planned.

“As BUZ officials we have only set the date for the national awards, more details will be available in due course when we have a board meeting to map the way forward,” he said.

Mujuru said the ceremony would honour this year’s winners of national events administered by BUZ from all corners of the country.
“This is the first time an event in the country is going to be honouring the victors of the Garure Memorial tournament (Harare), Bob 90 tournament (Gweru), inter-provincial games (Bulawayo), National Association of Secondary School Heads champions, provincial champions, national club champions and Youth Games champions and a special award for the Under-18 girls team that represented the country in Botswana now ranked fourth in Africa,” he said.

Mujuru said he believed the new executive that was put in place last December had already done a commendable job in their six months in office.

“We have managed to stage tournaments outside the capital something that for the past few years had been limited to Harare. We had club championships in Bulawayo and in Gweru among other small tournaments around the country,” he said, adding that the team that went to Botswana were the fruits of the national association. He revealed that they intended to have their awards ceremony broadcast on national television for them to gain recognition countrywide.
