A Bulawayo entrepreneur has designed a water filter system that is economic and portable especially for rural communities, schools and households in a bid to ensure people have access to clean water.

Mr Mqondisi Nzipo from Chemscore Holdings said the portable water filter was designed after realising the plight of rural communities.

“As we travelled in rural settings, I realised some communities did not have clean water. They used tablets to clean their water but it would only be drinkable for a day,” he said.

Mr Nzipo said he decided to find other methods of filtering the water so that people have access to clean water.

“The micro-filtration unit uses gravity to clean the water. You put your water be it from a borehole, a river or taps into a container and you connect the device to another and it filters all impurities that may be in the water,” said Mr Nzipo.

The portable water filter does not, however, clean chemically contaminated water, it only cleans the biological side of contamination. The unit can filter one litre of water in a minute and there is no need to boil the filtered water as it will be ready for use. Mr Nzipo said the unit can be connected to a household tap.

“With this filter, one can decide to connect it to their kitchen taps and it filters council water. This assists in that council water sometimes comes with some dirty stuff,” he added.

The water is filtered in two phases; the first phase filters grass, stones, soil and other impurities. The second phase will see the water passing through a micro-fibre filter which removes the finer particles leaving the water clean.

“Early Childhood pupils need to be monitored and they have to drink clean water. So a teacher can filter a 20-litre bucket in the morning and the children can spend the day drinking.

“Police officers also need such units when they are deployed in areas where they pitch tents, they may have a water source but can filter it especially in rural areas,” he said.
