BULAWAYO schools, Gifford and Evelyn High, scooped a total of five and three awards respectively at a glittering First Edition Doug Hill Drama festival held at Charles Austin Theatre in Masvingo last week.

The award winning Norbert Makoche, who directed the play that was performed by Gifford, said the Gifford team won because there were well prepared to return to the City of Kings as kings of theatre production in the schools category.

“Our purpose at Masvingo was to make sure that we come in Bulawayo as victors. I would like to thank the Nhimbe Trust for choosing us to represent Bulawayo,” he said.

The glamorous festival honoured Zimbabwe theatre veteran Doug Hill popularly known in Masvingo circles where he has been active for the past 50 years.

There were 10 schools from Masvingo, two from Bulawayo and one from Chiredzi put on a thunderous performance in a packed Austin theatre.

There were 10 schools that represented Masvingo while a single school represented Chiredzi.

Gifford and Eveline High schools took part in the festival on invitation by Nhimbe Trust.

There were 11 awards which were contested for and Gifford High scooped five of them, which are Best Actor (Sailas Matsika), Best Supporting Actor (Maxwell Kapoka), Best Cameo Role (Larry Thebe), Best Costume and best Production.

Gifford High performed a play titled: Behind Closed Doors, which is a candid expose of the fallacy of family relationships in a socio- cultural context.
Eveline High also showed the reason they were selected to represent Bulawayo by grabbing three awards namely best actress (Anita Moyo), best director (Hillary Moyo) and the runners up award.
