Byo set up sports management board

BULAWAYO Metropolitan Province has selected a 38 member board that will be led by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo, to administer all the sporting activities for athletes aged 20 and below in the province. The board which was inaugurated on Friday has already got its first major test, which is to raise $72 000 needed to send a team of 260 athletes to Masvingo next month for the National Youth Games.

Among the new board members is executive member of Choppies supermarkets Rajesh Modi who is the association’s chief executive officer, the national high jump record holder Juma Phiri who is the technical teams’ director, Thubelihle Sibanda, a product of the Youth Sports Exchange Programme was given a post in edutainment while David Simba retained his seat, the marketing and publicity portfolio.

Dan Moyo the provincial education director and Khonzani Ncube the Region Five Games Loc chairperson will supervise the board.
In a speech read on her behalf Minister Moyo applauded the outgoing board that was put in place in February 2011 for performing diligently and successfully. “Ladies and gentlemen help me to thank the previous board for the sterling job that they have done to the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Sports fraternity and general public at large,” she said.

She was full of praise for the Sports and Recreation Commission for coming up with a structure which supported sport management at provincial level saying that it had helped the country’s sport development.

“This team that I am commissioning tonight will be our driving wheel to help the province and country at large to achieve some of the international conventions which Zimbabwe is a member in terms of sport,” she said.
