BULAWAYO will add another feather to its cap, while also further enhancing its status as the country’s home of athletics, when they host the country’s most prestigious athletics event, the inter-provincials finals at White City Stadium at the end of the month.
White City has already been christened the home of athletes in Zimbabwe, due to its world class facilities that were upgraded ahead of the African Union Region Five Games that were hosted by Bulawayo last December.
The inter-provincials will also have an international flavour, with news that regional track and field powerhouse South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique had already confirmed involvement, while Botswana, were still yet to confirm participation, although they had already shown intent.
Confirming the event that will be held on 30 May and 31 May, National Athletics of Zimbabwe vice-president Enias Nhoro said all the country’s 10 provinces had also given the event the thumbs-up by confirming participation.
“All the country’s 10 provinces have confirmed participation, this is an important event in that it will be used to select athletes who are going to represent the country at the (IAAF World) senior athletics championships in August (in China) as well as the World Youth championships in Colombia in July,’’ said Nhoro.
Nhoro said the event would also have the much needed “international flavour”.
“South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique have already confirmed participation while we are still awaiting Botswana to commit themselves,’’ said Nhoro.
