WAR veterans in Bulawayo have labelled all aspirants to the second Vice Presidency as renegades who are going against Zanu-PF principles and are calling for urgent change in the unbecoming behaviour of senior party members, saying there should be no jostling for the post.
The war veterans provincial chairperson, Cde Japhet Phuthi, yesterday told Sunday News after a crisis meeting over the Vice President’s post that they were not going to sit and watch events unfolding when there was a clear procedure that should be followed.

“We have taken a decision to set the record straight and clear our position on the issue of the Vice Presidency. Zanu-PF has a culture and as people go to congress a Vice President should be chosen to cover the vacant post. As there is a senior person in the Presidium; naturally he should take over,” said Cde Phuthi.

He said there were individuals that had been campaigning for candidates they claim to be senior yet in actual fact they were not, which was causing unrest and confusion within the party and said those campaigning clandestinely should not imagine any victory.

Cde Phuthi said Bulawayo province was in total support of Zanu-PF national chairman, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, taking over the post as he was most senior and in line with the fashion of the party that has been occurring over the years.

He warned war veterans “that are being used in the underground campaigning” whom he accused of promoting factionalism in Zanu-PF.
“Such things destroy the aims of the Unity Accord of 1987 and I am warning all war vets that have a hand in this to stop as they are causing unnecessary unrest among the people which will weaken the party,” fumed Cde Phuthi.

The race to the Vice Presidency has been gathering momentum with several candidates showing much interest ahead of the party’s annual congress which has been slated for December this year.

President Robert Mugabe is on record saying people should avoid campaigning for this post.
The Bulawayo provincial war veterans chairperson further urged other provinces in the country to avoid campaigning clandestinely for candidates as it would be reason enough to show that they belonged to a faction.

He said the party should rally behind the national chairman and avoid using the name of war veterans in their illegal campaigning as war veterans were not campaigning for any people.

Cde Khaya Moyo has over the months been tipped to land the VP post, judging by his seniority in the revolutionary party while former South African Ambassador Phelekezela Mphoko, ex-Zipra commander Retired Brigadier General Ambrose Mutinhiri and Home Affairs Minister Cde Kembo Mohadi have been cited as contenders in the race.
Late Vice Presidents Dr Joseph Msika and Dr John Nkomo had been national chairmen prior to their elevation.

On Monday, ex-Zipra female cadres said the Zanu-PF December elective congress should not divert from the existing precedence of elevating party national chairman to the Vice Presidency.

Two weeks ago, Politburo member Cde Abednico Ncube torched a storm when he said Matabeleland South backed Khaya Moyo with senior party members in the province, Cdes Naison Ndlovu and Richard Ndlovu, accusing him of jumping the gun.

However, last week Matabeleland South chairman Cde Andrew Langa threw his weight behind Cde Ncube, saying he also shared the same sentiments.

Party spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo has said President Mugabe will have the final say in the choice of VP.
