NEW acquisition Aleck Marime propelled Chapungu to victory with a brace in the 3-0 win over his former club Border strikers in a Castle Larger Premier Soccer League match at Ascot Stadium yesterday. Marime who joined Chapungu during the July transfer window after spending the first half of the season on the sidelines for going AWOL from Hwange grabbed the opener with a beautiful header off a Jameson Mukombwe cross on the hour mark.

The much travelled Marime capped up his memorable afternoon with a brilliant run on the stroke of fulltime with a low shot past Border Strikers goalkeeper Talent Sande. Veteran striker Philip Marufu got the other goal in the 81st minute heading in a corner kick from Hillary Mugoniwa. Marime quickly declared that he was gunning for the golden boot after his brace.

“I want to be the top scorer at the end of the season and it’s very achievable. The top scorer is Bruce Kangwa with seven goals and he is not around and those behind him have six which means I now have to score four goals and be at par with them. I am very confident that I will catch up with them and surpass them very soon,” declared Marime.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino was ecstatic after the victory.

“Everyone was talking about Border Strikers coming to shock us here and they shocked us 3-0. We had really planned well for this match because we wanted to maximize on home advantage.

“The substitutions we made, changed the complexion of the match as we gained more possession,” said Nyikadzino.

His opposite number, Never Malunga was disappointed as he felt his charges could have won the match.

“It’s a disappointing result because we matched them well in the first half. The game changed when they got that goal and we panicked and conceded two more goals. It’s back to the drawing board for us as we prepare for the next match,” said Malunga.
