THE Zimbabwe national sevens rugby team the Cheetahs are through to the semi-finals of HSBC Sevens World Series qualifier in Hong following a 21-14 triumph over Brazil in the quarter-finals yesterday. Zimbabwe outscored Brazil by three tries to two with both teams managing to convert. The Jacques Leitao Cheetahs do not have an easy ride as they square off against Spain in the semi-finals today. The Spanish defeated the Zimbabweans 10-0 in their last group match yesterday.

A brilliant run out on the right wing by Germany-based Tafadzwa Chitokwindo who passed the responsibility to Hilton Mudariki, who touched down for the Cheetahs’ second try of the tournament which he (Mudariki) converted.

Mudariki landed his second try of the match when he latched onto a loose ball with his conversion kick giving Zimbabwe a 14-0 lead going into half-time.
Chitokwindo gave Zimbabwe their third try, his fifth for the tournament. Brazil did score their second try just before the end, but that could not stop Zimbabwe from sailing through to the last four of the qualifying event.

Zimbabwe’s loss to Spain yesterday had seen them finish second to the Spaniards in pool G with seven points.
At the same competition last year, Zimbabwe bowed out at the quarter-final stage with a 17-12 loss to Italy in extra time and this time around there is optimism that the Daniel Hondo coached team will go all the way and earn full membership next season.
