NATIONAL Under-17 team coach Moses “Bambo” Chunga has set the ball rolling in unearthing the best talent in the country as he prepares for the Council of Southern African Football Associations Championships scheduled for Mauritius next month.

Chunga will this morning hold trials at Raylton Sports Club where he is expects to identify players he would include in his provisional squad. The former national team striker was appointed Under-17 national team coach last week.

“I want to select the best available talent in the country so that we can develop it and deserving players get the chance to represent their country. I will be taking advantage of various tournaments taking place around the country and use them to select players while where possible I will hold trials,” he said.

On Friday and yesterday, Chunga was at Falcon College in Esigodini attending the Conference of Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe Under-20 football tournament, where he had the opportunity to watch players from 14 private schools which were taking part in the event. The former Dynamos footballer said players eligible for selection are those born on or after 1 July 2001.

Today’s session will be held at the home of Young Flying Stars Academy and Chunga said he expects all eligible players to avail themselves. The Cosafa Under-17 Championship will be held in Mauritius with eight teams set to battle it out from 21 to 30 July. Chunga emphasised the focus was on discovering and nurturing the future stars rather than seeking glory through winning the tournament. He said his aim would be to fish out the next Peter Ndlovu to grace the local game.

“Development is the main issue on the table, focus is not on winning but obviously it will be a bonus. I want to get the next Peter Ndlovu, the next Moses Chunga,” he said.

Mauritius will be hosting the tourney for the second year running with last year’s edition having been won by Namibia.
Zimbabwe have been drawn in with Group A and will square off in the preliminary stages against Botswana, Malawi and the hosts. In Group B there is last year’s finalists South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique and Madagascar.

The matches will be played at two venues — the Saint Francois Xavier in the Mauritius capital Port Louis, and the Mauritius Football Association Technical Centre. The opening match will be played on 21 July as South Africa host Mozambique. The final will be played nine days later on 30 July, with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the semi-finals.
