TWENTY-six Bulawayo based coaches on Saturday completed a two-day Zimbabwe Olympic Committee organised Long Term Athlete Development training workshop at a local hotel whose aim was to equip the mentors with the right skills in order for them to produce medal winners.

Drawn from the five districts in the metropolitan province, the teachers were taken through the various aspects of testing their athletes. The workshop was funded by the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

ZOC programmes officer, Newman Gomendo said the workshop, which was for teachers who work with young athletes was a way of equipping the trainers with skills to ensure that they are able to take their competitor to the next level.

“It was all about educating the coaches, on the planning for the future in terms of their athletes so the right skills in terms of them taking their athletes to the upper level. As Bulawayo province, this is actually to establish a 10-year plan for the athletes in the next coming years,’’ Gomendo said.

Gomendo’s expectation is that the coaches can go and implement what they got from the workshop for the country to have better and much improved athletes.

“We hope to have podium athletes as well, from the long term planning, in order for us to have podium athletes we need to have podium coaches so this is grooming of podium coaches who are going to take sports to the other level in the country ,’’ he said.

The National University of Science and Technology sports science department trio of Bhekuzulu Khumalo, Mxolisi Ndlovu as well as Morris Banda were the facilitators for the workshop. Sports and Recreation Commission Bulawayo provincial coordinator, Sam Dzvimbu was also involved in the workshop.

A similar workshop is planned for Harare coaches in October with plans to roll out the same programme to other provinces next year.
