VICE president Phelekezela Mphoko was yesterday set to officially open the much awaited for culture week commemorations in Filabusi, Matabeleland South.

The Culture Week commemorations which are spread to all over the country’s ten provinces were scheduled to kicked off yesterday with the main celebrations being done in Filabusi.

In interview with Sunday Life, Public Relations officer of the event Catherine Mthombeni said the event that is running under the theme Towards Increased Community Participation will end on May 26.

“This year’s Culture Week is running under the theme Towards Increased Community Participation. The theme seeks to encourage the participation of people from across the cultural divide in cultural activities and discourse. The participation of communities in Culture Week will help in bringing harmony and ownership of the programme by communities who are involved in the transmission processes as well as the enactment of culture forms,” said Mthombeni.

Mthombeni said the week-long programme will be punctuated with diverse activities that depict our varied ubuntu/unhu.

“We have many activities lined up for the culture week. We have 22 local exhibitors that will be showcasing and sell traditional artifacts, food and herbs. The exhibitors include Amagugu International Heritage Centre, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Kuyedza Women’s Club and Ministry of Gender and Women Affairs. We will also be having performances from different artistes such as poet Albert Nyathi, Lerato Nqindi, imbube music outfit Black Umfolosi and Jays Marabini amongst many other entertainers,” she said.

Mthombeni said the aim of hosting a culture week was to preserve and promote indigenous cultural heritage.

“The purpose of hosting a culture week is to bring together diverse arts and cultural activities of the sub-region and other parts of the world for public consumption. We want to provide an opportunity for the people in Zimbabwe to appreciate the diversity of the arts and cultures of the world and to bring about national, regional and international social integration through the art and culture. This culture week therefore provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and views between artistes and other cultural workers within the sub-region, African continent and the world,” she said.

The Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity by Unesco in 2001 proclaimed May of each year the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, cognisant of the phenomenal growth in popularity this World Day has been enjoyed hitherto.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) decided to make this occasion a weeklong event in 2002 hence the existence of the Culture Week every year.
