DECORATING or designing a study room can be tricky. For some it is a place where people go to relax while for some it’s where they do their business — it is a personal space. A study room should reflect a person’s character, personality and individuality. Hence it should be organised and furnished in a way that allows the user to feel more comfortable and at the same time looking elegant.

A typical study might contain a desk, chair, computer, desk lamps and bookshelves. In some homes a spare bedroom was often utilised as a study, but that is not the case anymore. Many modern homes have a room specifically designated as a study. When designing it the layout of the room should be adapted to the user’s style and needs.

In this week’s column we will explore some of the ways of sprucing up the looks of your study.

Since the room resembles the user, conventional furniture is a wonderful option. It allows you to make the most of the room, including only the details and elements you need and want. There are different ways of personalising your study room through elements such as rugs, carpets, some wall decor or simply the way you decide to store and organise everything.

Make the most of a wall by furnishing it with a long, wall-mounted shelving unit or with lots of storage cubbies for books, desk accessories as well as a few decorations. Under this unit there can be a simple wall-mounted desk and a few stools that fit nicely underneath.

Another great way to use a wall, especially one with a difficult shape, is by building a custom bookcase. It can cover the entire wall and can be the main storage element in the room. This type of design suits those with large book collections. The colour of the room should also be taken into account, think carefully about the colour you want to use which will reflect your personality, not forgetting the peaceful nature of the room.

Make the most of a small and narrow study room by incorporating open shelves and wall-mounted desks. There’s plenty of space here for everything, including a cosy window seat.
