THERE are a lot of factors which determine kitchen flooring and these include how much you cook, how big is your kitchen and its durability. This week we will explore some of the ideal flooring types which one may consider.

Hardwood flooring may be considered as primitive when not done correctly — but for experts it is ideal. Hardwood flooring makes a great choice if you want to create a look that never really goes out of style. For big kitchens with open floor, hardwood works well in the process bringing warmth and an exquisite unified look. This type of flooring is easy to maintain, not easily damaged and moisture resistant if you choose the right type.

If you want the toughest flooring, like the look of stone and prefer low maintenance, porcelain tile is the right choice for you.

This type of flooring is ideal for your kitchen in the sense that it is fired up with high temperatures that produce an extremely firm, long-lasting, stain-resistant tile that is impermeable to moisture.

When choosing porcelain tiles there are two types namely glazed and unglazed. Glazed tiles have a glass-like coating that can be made in any colour and it can have the look and texture of real stone in a cheaper cost. Unglazed type take on the colour of their clay mixture, hence they bring a natural feel to your kitchen.

Another way of flooring your kitchen is using cork flooring which is made from tree barks. This is an uncommon type of flooring which people ignore. It can only be used by people who prefer an eco-friendly environment, it does not slip and it is much softer than any other type of flooring. But unlike other flooring options mentioned, cork floors need to be resealed every three to four years to help guard against scratches and prevent moisture from entering the seams between tiles.

Besides cork flooring there are other resilient flooring called vinly which is just as soft as cork. If you cook a lot, this cushiness makes it easier on your feet while easing muscle fatigue. Vinyl flooring is easy to maintain, it’s completely waterproof and stainproof.

On the upside, sheet vinyl requires no on-going maintenance beyond sweeping and mopping. If the softness of vinyl flooring appeals to you most, you might opt for cushioned vinyl flooring, which is backed with a layer of foam (standard sheet vinyl uses felt backing).

Sheet vinyl comes in many colours and patterns. Thicker vinyl can feature a textured surface, and some types do an excellent job of mimicking the appearance of ceramic tile and real stone. Textured vinyl is a wise choice because it provides traction.

Vinyl can be dangerously slippery when wet. — Additional information from Online sources.
