PEOPLE grieve in many different ways over the death of someone close to them. In most instances some turn to alcohol and substance abuse, while some find solace in prayers.

However, a Bulawayo DJ-cum-producer who lost his sister to cancer, decided to play a 10-hour set, in memory of her, also while creating awareness about the disease.

Born Mduduzi Ngoma, DJ MduSevan said the theme of the 10-hour set, which turned out to be quite the popular event, was Ten Hours of Pink Awareness.

“It was held on 2 September at Pub Lagondola’s Cigar Lounge. It started off at 11am and went on until around 9pm. It was a record breaking event that doubled up as a cancer awareness event. I was playing deep commercial house music and hip hop,” said DJ MduSevan.

He said he sought to set a record of the longest set played by any DJ in Zimbabwe.

“It so happens that I lost my sister to cancer and I decided to create awareness, while also setting a record. I decided to fuse the event into an awareness and fun event,” he said.

DJ MduSevan said people had mixed feelings about the event and thought it was impossible to play a continuous 10-hour set.

“I mostly play house music and some thought it was impossible to play one genre continuously and still have people dancing. But surprisingly people came out in their numbers and they came as early as 10am to catch the event. The place was packed by 4pm. There were lots of socialites that came to support the event and cause,” he said.

DJ MduSevan added that he had plans to turn the event into an annual programme, in remembrance of his sister and also a cancer awareness campaign.

“This will be annual programme. I want to turn the event into an awareness campaign, which will have a walk and a clean-up campaign. At the moment I am still in talks with relevant authorities and seeking funds for the event next year,” he said. — @peterkmatika
