MOSES Chunga’s brilliant start to life at Harare City was halted by resurgent Dynamos in an entertaining premiership match at Rufaro Stadium yesterday.
Chunga had won two in as many matches, since replacing Taurai Mangwiro at the helm of the Sunshine Boys, but DeMbare who came into the fixture on the back of two consecutive wins spoiled Bambo’s run through first half goals by midfielders Masimba Mambare and 21-year-old Bret Amidu.
While there was nothing out of the ordinary from Dynamos’ display yesterday, their purposeful play and organisation made mockery of the directionless and aimless side they had been reduced to under the mentorship of Portuguese Jorge Silva.
City enjoyed the lion’s share of possession for the entire duration of the match but their attackers led by former Dynamos striker Francesco Zekumbawira and Martin Vengesayi appeared to run out of ideas each time they ventured into promising positions.
They rarely threatened Zimbabwe international goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva for all their efforts.
On the contrary, Dynamos — when in possession — were always threatening and Lloyd Mutasa’s decision to start with youngsters — Musa Madhiri (17 years), Kudzanai Nyakasaka (19), King Nasama (18) and Amidu (21) paid off.
It was also a good day in office for right back Godknows Murwira, who celebrates his 23rd birthday next Monday, as he made numerous overlapping runs that gave Chunga’s men a torrid afternoon.
“The youngsters are working very hard and if they continue on the same path then the sky is the limit for them,” Mutasa said.
“It was evident from the time the season started that our weakness was scoring and the moment we started scoring, self-belief automatically returned to the boys hence the points we are getting,” he said.
DeMbare got the lead as early as the 10th minute when Masimba Mambare headed home from an Ocean Mushure corner kick.
Amidu then doubled the advantage in the 24th minute when he fired home from the edge of the box after a goal mouth melee.
The win takes Dynamos’ points tally to 17 and they now average more than a goal per match having scored seven in the six matches that Mutasa has been in charge.
For Chunga it was also the first time that he watched his men concede more than one goal in a match having previously won 2-1 and 2-0.
And it is in defence that Chunga said the Sunshine Boys lost it.
“It did not go according to plan. We were sloppy in defence and allowed Dynamos to score those goals,” said Chunga.
“Unfortunately we did not get the result but for me it is always good to be back at Rufaro,” said Chunga who got a warm reception from the Dynamos fans.
