President Mugabe

PRESIDENT Mugabe yesterday turned 91 — what a milestone achievement for this great son of Africa. We believe achieving such a milestone calls for Zimbabwe, Africa and all the progressive forces of the world to celebrate with this great icon of the liberation struggle who led from the front in the fight against the colonialists. It is important to note that President Mugabe’s Pan African agenda makes him connect with people from all corners of the world.

President Mugabe, who Zimbabwe is lucky to have, has spent a lifetime fighting for the economic emancipation of the down-trodden both at home and beyond the country’s borders. At home President Mugabe has made it possible for his people to be empowered economically as he is the one behind the crafting of revolutionary policies such as the indigenisation programme, land reform and has also greatly improved the country’s education sector. People should remember that at Independence there was only one university in the country, but now every province has a State university. Private ones have also sprouted around the country.

The country has also achieved a lot under the wise leadership of President Mugabe in sectors such as health despite the fact we are groaning under the evil sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the imperial West because of the revolutionary land reform programme.

As we celebrate President Mugabe’s birthday, we believe our people especially the youths, who are future leaders of the country will draw lessons from the life of this great man. The President is a personification of discipline, dedication and sacrifice, qualities that seem to be eluding this current generation that lacks patience and principle. His exemplary life on and off the political field is a marvel to look at. Our youths should take seriously that for the country to keep its sovereignty we need people made of sterner stuff such as President Mugabe who despite the wanton vilification by the West has not broken down, but has managed to fend off the imperial forces with much aplomb.

The President’s life has also taught us that one can succeed even when the odds are stacked against him or her. President Mugabe today is an intellectual giant and he got most of his degrees from the dark cells of the Ian Smith regime. He read for his degrees in the face of all adversity as he was in prison where the conditions were horrible. But our youths today are so brittle that if they are chastised for transgressing from the norm they cry blue murder. It is against such situations that we urge every Zimbabwean especially the youths to love their country like what President Mugabe and his colleagues in the struggle have shown us. Some of them including President Mugabe abandoned their jobs and all the trappings they had to join the liberation struggle to free this country from the yoke of colonialism.

As all roads lead to Victoria Falls this coming Saturday where the main celebrations for the President’s birthday will be held we urge all Zimbabweans to draw lessons from the life of this great man. Once again we thank the Almighty for blessing this country by giving us a man of such leadership quality in the form of President Mugabe. We join the nation in saying Congratulations, Makorokoto, Amhlophe Gushungo. May the Lord give you many more years.
