EDITORIAL COMMENT: Mujuru intentions ‘as clear as the summer’s sun’

The Sunday News

Decisions made in Washington are more important to us than those made here in Dar es Salaam. So, maybe my people should be allowed to vote in American presidential elections.” These were sarcastic yet powerful words by former Tanzanian President and one of the icons of African nationalism — Julius Nyerere — when making a point that Africans were easily swayed by what the American or Western governments wanted done in the continent, forgetting that Africans have no say on how the West should run its affairs.

Perhaps former Vice-President Dr Joice Mujuru needs to be reminded of such statements, bearing in mind that Zimbabwe has suffered a lot under illegal economic sanctions imposed by Britain and her allies, and in fact, the country has continued to suffer disturbances both on the political and economic front from the machinations of foreign powers like United States.

It is such states that have been bankrolling opposition political parties in the country, and of late, Pastor Evan Mawarire, who has been on the forefront of organising violent protests against the Government is holed up in the United States, a clear sign that he has handlers there.

America and her friends have been taking turns to speak ill of President Mugabe, and we note Dr Mujuru has joined the bandwagon, even questioning the leadership of the man who mentored her and gave her an opportunity to serve in cabinet since independence, and rise the ladder to become Vice-President until she was kicked out of Government and the ruling Zanu-PF party in recent years.

When Dr Mujuru was kicked out of the ruling party, she went out kicking and screaming, claiming innocence after being identified as the ring leader of a cabal that wanted to topple President Mugabe, but now she has nowhere to hide. Her intentions are “as clear as is the summer’s sun” to borrow the line from William Shakespeare, in The Life of King Henry the Fifth.

Described by one politician as leading a party that is like a little coat of many colours — a mere patchwork of little rags, people of no consequence, Dr Mujuru has indeed turned against the revolution, the party that gave her a life, and has totally lost the fundamental principles of the revolution — all because of the love for power.

And what is now clear is that she has always concealed some sell-out tendencies which have now come to the open. It was no coincidence that she met and held a joint demonstration and rally with MDC-T president Mr Morgan Tsvangirai in Gweru recently and it was not by mistake that she chose to join opposition politics after being kicked out of Zanu-PF.

We agree with those who believe the ruling party was correct in firing her from the party. The party has indeed being vindicated.

Political and social commentators said the Zanu-PF leadership did not err when it expelled Dr Mujuru and her entire cabal because they would have destroyed the party from within, and their continued wining and dining with the opposition parties was not good for the revolutionary party.

Political analyst Mr Godwine Murerirwa told Herald that the shenanigans that Dr Mujuru, her late husband and the broader cabal did in the 2008 election through bhora musango had been revealed.

“Covertly, they were working with the MDC, overtly they have now come out in the open showing the whole world what they have been doing all along,” said Mr Mureriwa.

He said to show that Dr Mujuru had for long been working for the regime change agenda, her pact with the MDC-T had been smooth, indicating they have been working on it for some time.
