INSIZA North legislator and former Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Cde Andrew Langa yesterday turned to God and was baptised at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) at Filabusi Centre where he boldly declared he was no longer going to drink beer.
Cde Langa urged other politicians to turn to God as there were no true friends in politics but in church.
“I have decided to repent. We know that Zimbabwe is a peace-loving country and God-fearing nation and I thought that as a leader I have to go to church. I have been going to church but had no specific church and I have been prayerful. I then decided to join SDA because that’s where I have been called. I want to ask church members to pray for me so that I can be able to abide by my vows and also grow spiritually,” said Cde Langa after the baptism ceremony.
Asked whether he will no longer be taking wise waters, with a beaming smile Cde Langa said: “It’s tough luck to my friends because they are going to miss me. There is no reason to tempt God hence I will not be going from one bar to another. That is in the past. I will be at this church every Saturday and I am very thankful to church leaders and I will not disappoint God.”
His family endured a torrid time last year after the former Cabinet Minister and Zanu-PF chairman for Matabeleland South lost two siblings within a month. He said besides his calling, his family loss also reminded him that there was a need to turn to God.
Said Cde Langa: “The year 2015 was a bad year for the Langa family and I then realised that when you don’t go to church you will find it difficult as time goes by. The Head of State, President Mugabe is a God fearing man and was appointed to be President by God. When the Head of State and Government is a God-fearing man and has demonstrated to all and sundry that he has people at heart, why can’t I also go to church.”
Cde Langa who is set to start his Masters Degree in Public Administration this year said his political misfortunates which saw him being suspended from holding party positions were now history.
“What happened in 2014 and 2015 is in the past. There are no friends in politics as when you go up they fight hard to bring you down. I am not moved by what happened.
“That is politics and the truth will come out one day. I have worked for this party and there is no reason why I should betray my party hence I will continue working for it,” he said.
