Expensive hair, hairdos and products . . . are they really worth it?

THIS is one question that has boggled not only my mind but perhaps that of countless men and I guess a handful of women.
Before I go further, I should note that this is a very broad topic and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
This is a question you can ask a number of people and get a variety of answers. Some women swear by the name of the products they use. Others insist that the products they use are just as good as anything on the market or salon.

If you pose the same question to hairdressers, you will probably be referred to a shelf or a bag filled with products for sale right there in the salon.

The difference is the preference of individual’s tastes, as in accordance with their hair.
Nonetheless, as I progress into today’s topic, I must mention that I mean no disrespect to anyone, but I have always pondered to myself why women go for these expensive hairdos which they struggle to afford.

It’s a fact that most women can’t afford these hairpieces, yet they are drawn to them like bugs are attracted to repulsive and putrid carcasses.
Think about it, buying a weave that is worth $300 and having someone plait it for an equally expensive fee, is it worth it? I know most women are by now getting offended with what I’m writing but I would advise, read on . . .

And having a $300 weave on your head, are you able to maintain it?
Such a weave needs to be maintained and there are certain (expensive) products that obviously complement it.

I do appreciate that there are working women that can afford to wear such hairstyles and maintain them. I obviously mean no pun to them but to those that go around proudly stating that they wear expensive hairdos because their man/men can afford them, you seriously need to examine your heads.

While I was on Facebook just the other day, I happened to come across my friend’s girlfriend’s newsfeed. I was really appalled by what she wrote, she openly bragged about “her man” doing her hair and how she was going for something expensive. I shook my head in disbelief and displeasure after reading the post and thought to myself, “I am sure she can’t even afford to do her own hair, even if it is a simple hairstyle.

Does she even comprehend the mathematics involved in picking out hair and what it means to wear such expensive hairstyles?”
I posed the same question on social media and I received some of the most interesting answers.

One lady said: “The key is to be willing to do some research, if your goal is to get the best product for the money, then be willing to give the less expensive brands a try to see how they work for you. If you just want the best for your head then read hair and beauty magazines and pay attention to reviews and comments but always remain skeptical.

“Don’t buy into the reports on a product in a magazine when there are advertisements for that product in the same magazine. If the only reason you buy the expensive brands is just for show off then you have a problem,” said one Emilia.
Who really would know that you are wearing an expensive wig anyway?

Lee-Anne answered my question, stating that for women, hair meant the world to them.
“There are people that have hair that either grows slowly or have bald patches on their heads, thus they resort to weaves and other hairpieces. For some it’s just for fun just the same way men enjoy going to watch soccer, women enjoy visiting the salon.

“People are different and are willing to spend money on different things; it’s not about the money. Some hairpieces and weaves are noticeable of course and are durable, as compared to others.”

So I then asked her if she could afford to do her own her and her response was just priceless. “Don’t comment on my hair if you won’t pay for it. I do my own hair, of course with the assistance of my dad but I don’t appreciate people commenting on my hair if they don’t pay for it.”
Another lady said she would consider asking herself several questions before going to the salon.

“I would ask myself questions such as, what was my past experience with other hair products compared to a high-end stuff? Is the hairstyle I want to wear complicated or have a lot of hair that may need extra expertise? Most often, high-end hairdos need experienced and qualified hairdressers, who keep up their hair trends. These hair professionals are up to date with the latest hair trends and possess a lot more creative cutting techniques up their sleeves than any other hair dresser. They are aware of their talent and you as a customer or client will be paying their knowledge and expertise for the best hairstyle possible,” explained Natasha.

So there are a lot of things to consider before waltzing off to the salon.
The late legendary French fashion icon and designer Coco Chanel once said, “A woman that cuts her hair is about to change her life.”
I am sure that she had considered a lot of issues concerning women’s hair before making that statement.
