FASHION does influence plastic surgery: take the low-rise jean. The popularity of this jean has lowered the scar in the tummy tuck procedure. The scar is now placed much lower on the abdomen, to accommodate this particular cut, which is a very popular purchase for women. The pictures we see in magazines and the images we scroll through on the internet tend to sway our opinions of what we perceive as beautiful “at the moment”. But we all know that fashion, like the wind, shifts.

You! Never Go Out of Style

Trends and opinions can change swiftly, that is the norm. The media and what we see in magazines pushes for a certain look, but just like fashion it can be fleeting. It is wise to be cautious about letting fashion drive your desire for plastic surgery. Off course surgeons must be aware of fashion to properly adapt their procedures to changing trends, but trends should never push someone to a cosmetic procedure. Surgery is permanent, so you want to make sure that you are making a reasonable decision that is not trendy, but will serve well over the changes in fashion or looks or what the Kardashians look like. Experts point out that fashion changes, but surgery should be about looking natural, not trendy. Always seek to be your best “you”, as that will never go out of style.

Patients want breast implants to be able to wear certain clothes like swimsuits and nice dresses that would look better without a bra, but . . . the era of the jumbo breast implant is over, therefore most women are going for breast reductions. With plunging necklines, ladylike silhouettes, sheer fabrics, ruffles and lingerie-inspired fashions being all the rage on catwalks of high-end labels like Fendi, Erdem and Bottega Veneta, it’s no surprise women are opting for subtle enhancements that will allow them to effortlessly wear the current trends.

Social media has also played a part in the increase of cosmetic surgeries in the last few years according to the celeb physician.

Not only because people are always wanting to look their best, but has it broken the taboo. People are more open to talking about it, showing their results and sharing experiences — so the shame has been lifted in a way.

Cosmetic surgery and fashion are more closely linked than you might think. The latest fashion trends tend to influence which body type is most desirable, which in turn has an effect on the type of cosmetic surgery people are choosing to have. In the past, larger breasts were deemed attractive and many clothes featured plunging necklines. Throughout this period, breast enlargement surgery was incredibly popular and many celebrities, like Victoria Beckham and Katie Price, flaunted their perky cleavages. More recently, an athletic build has become the idealised figure. On the catwalk it’s become common to see tomboyish models, wearing high-necked shirts and loose fitting athleisure clothing to accentuate their small frames. As a result, breast reduction surgery has now become popular.

Of course, it’s important to remember that choices related to your body should be made for you and not the models you see on the catwalk. However, it’s interesting to see how closely cosmetic surgery trends and fashion are interlinked.

There are now a number of fashion models who are using social media to promote themselves and the brands they work for.

Once they’ve attracted a wide following online, some models are opening up conversations about the reality of their jobs. This includes discussing the cosmetic surgery procedures they have had and the staged, edited nature of many of their fashion shoots. This is changing the way the fashion industry is perceived, making it more open and transparent. Some models are also talking about the negative impacts that the industry can have on them, including mental health issues, such as eating disorders, which are caused by the high pressure environment. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian-West have also spoken out about their experience with plastic surgery. She has regularly filmed herself having treatment such as Botox, which is only helping to increase acceptance of the cosmetic surgery.

Plastic surgery has been an integral part of catwalk shows and the fashion industry throughout its history. Models having cosmetic surgery and making severer alterations to their appearance is not a new concept. However, as plastic surgery becomes more widely accepted, the catwalk shows have started to focus on the procedures themselves, rather than simply using the models to promote the designer’s latest clothes. One example of such a show was the Faces of Beauty show, which occurred in Fashion Week 2013. The show aimed to promote cosmetic surgery as an option for everyone, not just Hollywood celebrities. However, it was received with a mixed reception.

Fashion trends and celebrities have a great influence on how people perceive beauty. It all starts from the western countries to Africa. We have African celebrities such as Khanyi Mbau and Kelly Khumalo bleaching their skin, some getting butt implants so that they look like Nicki Minaj or Amber Rose. These over the top looks work well on public figures though, in order for them to be more appealing.

The dangers of these influences on ordinary people is that not all can afford to have these procedures done by professionals.

Back door surgery becomes the only option because it is cheap however, the damage can ruin your body or lead to death.

Plastic surgery is a wild trend that needs to be let alone. — Additional information from online sources.
