MOST people assume that men’s fashion trends are easier to pull off than women’s. This is not true, men put in the same amount of work in looking great too. Not every guy is a fashionista but those who are, pay attention to detail when it comes to trends. Men these day are looking sharp and are giving women competition.

The ‘‘classic men’’ are all over the streets, showing off their style and class. Classic men are those guys who care how they look and will always follow trends.

Men’s fashion is not only limited to the vintage style of dress though, you can rock the traditional jeans with a tee and sneakers and still look great. The thing about fashion trends, they are not meant for everyone, some can rock slim suits well while some look better in sweat pants. Being a classic man is all about being confident in your style of dress.

This summer new trends have been introduced, so guys you can give the vintage look a rest.

What men should be wearing this summer

1 Denims — good news for the guys who are fans of denims. This summer’s denim is ripped, patched and bleached — all but destroyed. Those who are bold and risk-takers can go for the ones slashed to pieces, the key takeaway is that your jeans should look a bit old — whether that’s through a lighter wash or a repair or two.

2 Baseball caps — you don’t have to be a baseball fan to pull this look off, its fashion. Baseball caps have been trending for a while, on runways and the streets. These new caps are made from luxurious materials such as leather, suede and exotic skins.

They are intended to be worn just as easily with your suit as with your weekend jeans.

3 Backpacks/satchel — the backpack revolution has been happening for a while now — this season they come in different shapes, sizes and materials — boosting the genre to all new heights of sleekness. Some of them are bedazzled with shiny rhinestones and spikes. Leather backpacks are more on the mature side and can be worn by men in the corporate sector, while the bedazzled ones will be appropriate for the youth. The backpack has to be stylish though.

4 Socks and sandals — at first we were introduced to shower shoes and socks, now sandals are acceptable too. This trend is for the fashion conscious men who follow most trends. This trend has been showcased from Italian runways to South Africa. I wonder if the feet won’t get hot though in summer but it is THE trend. (Good luck with this one gents.) Sandals to be worn should have leather straps with white tube socks made of cotton or cashmere iterations.

5 Print on print — this trend has been making waves especially in West African countries and now overseas. Wearing print from head-to-toe is the in thing. Whether you go for matching print at the top and bottom or two complementary exploded prints, the key is pulling this off without a glitch. Keep your accessories solid coloured and preferably in blank-canvas shades like navy, black or white and let that big bold print speak for itself.

6 Knee-skimming shorts — shorts are very appropriate for summer. While we see plenty of sporty style thigh-grazers on the catwalk, perhaps the more wearable shorts trend this summer is something slightly longer. The trendy shorts are knee length and tailored slim without a turn up and most of them are pressed with a crease or silk is added on as a trim. Navy is the colour to look out for when it comes to these shorts. Shorts are easy to wear, you can throw over a tee or sweater and still look fab.

The colour grey — usually the warmer months in summer invite an explosion of colour on the streets, but for this summer it’s all about the colour grey. It’s a colour all men have in their wardrobes already, but it’s all about how you wear it, varying shades and patterns of grey should be worn all at once to create a look that’s big on texture.

7 Get some greens — green has been around for a few seasons but this summer it will be booming. While we have previously seen green as a head-to-toe outfit in the same shade, we are looking forward to seeing the shades split up and mixed together.

Adopt the trend in fitted suit styles, the colour will also work well for statement jackets and accessories. Green scarves also work effectively to lend a jolt of colour to simplistic casual wear, amplifying your look.

Look sharp th “classic man”.
