WHEN you do not have a weave on, women will say maybe it’s because you cannot afford one, then when you wear one you are said to be ‘‘fake’’.

Weaves have been around for years now, not just for black women but for all races. When a white woman has extensions in her hair we say it’s cool but when a sister has a Brazilian on she is not being natural. Black women do wear weaves because in some instances their natural hair is not seen as appropriate and socially unacceptable.

Some feel the need to get a lace wig because ‘‘the elite’’ or ‘‘famous’’ are wearing them. Having a weave on should be a personal choice.

There is no point in having two bunches of Brazilian hair which do not suit you or look like a hat. The point is to enhance your beauty right? The good part about having a weave on is that you can get a different texture, straight, curly or kinky hair. If someone is wearing a weave that doesn’t mean they have low self-esteem (most would say), they are just trying to get a different look.

A weave is perfect if it is in good condition and the texture is right, it also has to be sewn on well. The truth is natural hair is hard to maintain most times. With perms, dyes, blow-drying every morning, that is a strain. In order to avoid having the hair breaking and falling away, the weave is manageable and easier to maintain. Some ladies say they feel naked without the weave on. To them having a weave is like having makeup on.

You save a lot of time when you have a weave on rather than combing and styling daily. For some it is not about fashion but it is simply easy and saves time, than trying to comb and pin down kinky hair on a daily basis. Apparently weaves look better as compared to natural hair. Well, it always depends on the type of weave, some people look beautiful without the weave on.

Fashion is the biggest reason why weaves will always be on trend. Straight, long hair will forever be classic, in style and on runways. Even though there are many other different styles most women believe that a weave is the way to go. Majority of celebrities wear lace wigs and weaves and the Western culture has made women to believe that is the only way to look beautiful or acceptable in society.

Weaves are always trendy and the upside to that is weaves suit almost everyone, too well that if some didn’t have weaves on we wouldn’t recognise them.

A weave is a protective hairstyle, weaves are not only for the outer appearance but help the covered hair grow, get thicker and for the hairline to recover well. That’s if your hair hasn’t been damaged by dyeing and retouching. Some women use weaves because they simply have no choice, their hair doesn’t grow long. This can be due to health reasons, aging or bald spots, so a weave is a good cover up.

A weave doesn’t always have to be long and straight and short and curly. You can change it up.

— Highlights — having highlights added to a weave is a great way to blend in the tones of your own hair with weaves for a totally natural look. Depending on your base colour, copper shades, caramel, honey or medium brown are the best highlights to add to maroon (brunette) or black hair.

— Wavy/curly weaves — if you have a nicely-shaped forehead you will look best in this style that’s brushed back from your face. Add some curly or loosely waved texture to create a lovely, face flattering frame to accentuate your eyes, mouth and chin.

— Short edgy weaves — choppy layers are a total trend right now. You can get an asymmetrical bob, or a bob with a fringe or the popular pixie look. Minimise a round face with a choppy layer and uneven tips, combed forward onto the face to add loads of extra style to short, smooth and volumised hair.

For those who are not into weaves, it’s still okay to have your natural hair, if you love it and feel sexy that’s all that matters, after all you are not your hair.
