FALCON College contributed the highest number of players in the Zimbabwe national Under-18 rugby team for the annual Coca-Cola Craven Week in South Africa which was announced at the conclusion of the Old Mutual bankrolled two day inter-provincial tournament held at the private school in Esigodini yesterday.

Still yet to taste defeat from the pre-season with eight wins out of the eight matches they have played so far, Falcon who play host to Peterhouse on Saturday had nine of their players named in the Godwin “Jaws” Murambiwa coached Junior Sables 22 men travelling squad. These were front rowers Ackim Sibanda, Brian Muntanga, Cleopas Kundiona, scrumhalf Campbell Nyakudya, flyhalf Benjamin Meredith, winger Sam Phiri, centre Jordan Zietsman, loose forward Stuart Dodington and lock forward Levi Fargnoli.

In addition, Falcon College had four of their youngsters named among the six non travelling reserves.

The Under-18 Craven Week side has five players who went to the same tournament in Middelburg last year.

Muntanga, Nyakudya, Sibanda, the Saint George’s College backline duo of Angus Bruce and fullback Tarisai Mapfumo were the boys who managed to impress the national selectors for a second year in a row. Sam Garnett of Saint John’s College won the best Under-18 forward, Mapfumo was adjudged the best backline player while Muntanga was voted the most outstanding talent on display at the tournament.

Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, Western Cape is the venue for this year edition of the Under-18 Craven Week set for 12 to 18 July.

Also announced yesterday at Falcon College was the Douglas Trivella coached national team for the Under-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week to be staged in Oudtshoorn, South Africa from 6 to 9 July.

The trials were attended by Zimbabwe Rugby Union chief executive Colleen De Jonge, the union’s direction of rugby Brighton Chivandire representatives of the sponsors Old Mutual, Tendai Mutseyekwa, the diversified financial group’s senior communications consultant and Cabs southern region manager Edson Ngaaseke.
