VICE-PRESIDENT Phelekezela Mphoko has called on Zimbabweans to embrace peace as this was the late Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo’s biggest wish.

Speaking during the 17th anniversary gala held in memory of Dr Nkomo at White City Stadium in Bulawayo which started on Friday night and ended yesterday morning, VP Mphoko said the only way to remember Father Zimbabwe, as Dr Nkomo was known, was to do things which he loved most which include peace.

“We need to do things just like what Umdala uNkomo would have loved, let us enjoy in peace. This man that we are celebrating was a great man, a unifier and we should do the same and be like him. He was loved indeed,” he said.

VP Mphoko said Dr Nkomo was a man who was committed to serving the people at all times and worked tirelessly to ensure there was independence and peace in the country.

He said the late VP was passionate about seeing the emancipation of the black majority and also wanted to see Zimbabweans being empowered accordingly as they were surrounded by vast wealth such as land and minerals. VP Mphoko said Dr Nkomo had a beautiful vision for his fellow countrymen but did not live long enough to see many of his dreams coming true.

Various projects were implemented by the late VP Nkomo including Ekusileni Hospital in Hillside, a fruit and tomato canning project in Umguza and Norton. There is also a museum at his former residence in Matsheumhlope suburb in Bulawayo.

The Umdala Wethu Gala was organised by the Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial youth league and thousands of people braved the chilly weather to attend the gala in their numbers. The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Bulawayo Cde Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo said she was glad to have been associated with a man like the late Father Zimbabwe who had the interests of the people at heart. She said Zimbabwe was blessed to have had him as a leader and that those alive should carry forward his legacy for generations to come.

Zanu-PF Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Kudzi Chipanga urged the youth and progressive Zimbabweans to attend galas in their numbers, saying the Umdala Wethu Gala will set the tone for the revival of other galas of founding fathers like the late Vice-Presidents: Simon Muzenda, Joseph Msika and Landa John Nkomo. Various local artistes from the city and beyond also gave stunning performances at the gala. Both young and old came to celebrate the life of the iconic leader. Zanu-PF national political commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere and Mpopoma-Pelandaba MP (Zanu-PF), Cde Joe Tshuma, among other party leaders attended the event.

Some of the musicians and artistes who performed at the gala included Iyasa, Jeys Marabini, Sulumani Chimbetu, Jah Prayzah, Winky D, Clement Magwaza, Cal_Vin, Martin and Ndolwane Super Sounds and PoZee.

Every year, Zimbabwe celebrates the life of Dr Nkomo, one of the founding fathers of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and national hero who died on 1 July 1999 and was buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
