FOUNDATION College in Nkulumane walked away with $400 last week after it emerged the overall winner in the HIV and Aids quiz competition which was organised by National Aids Council.

Foundation beat seven other private colleges in the city to win the prize money which was sponsored by NAC’S affiliate, Youth in Action Against Spread of HIV and Aids (YAASHA).

The quiz competition began this year and it is expected to be an annual event with the objective of equipping the youths with knowledge in issues to do with sexual and reproductive health, drug and substance abuse as well as stigma.

The competition comes at a time when statistics released by NAC shows a rise in youths taking drugs and substances which result in them engaging in premature sex.

Speaking during the ceremony NAC Nkulumane district co-ordinator Ms Simangaliphi Moyo said statistics revealed that youths were indulging in premarital sexual activities.

“The competition is part of efforts aimed at attaining one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of eradicating HIV and Aids pandemic in 2030 by creating platforms which help in properly guiding the youths,” said Ms Moyo.

Speaking at the same occasion, YAASHA programmes manager Mr Ezweni Kohomela said the competition was for private education institutions and that their agenda was not necessarily to compete but to develop HIV free leaders and responsible citizens who would help change communities through educating them about the pandemic.

Nkulumane Foundation College guidance and counselling teacher Ms Sandra Sithole could not contain her joy after her pupils came first.

She said she was so happy that her efforts had been rewarded after her pupils showed the highest standard of awareness on issues to do with HIV and Aids beating other colleges to the prize.

The quiz is a complementary gesture to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s new curriculum thrust as it helps to transform behaviour and create a conducive learning and teaching environment for all.
