AN Esigodini teenager assaulted a police officer at a bar who had previously arrested her boyfriend, depriving her of the fun and comfort of her lover.
The 19-year-old who was at Habane Beer Hall felt lonely and upon seeing the officer who led to the arrest of her sweetheart went into a rage and thought of disciplining him. Nomvuyo Mpengesi appeared before Esigodini magistrate Mr Tawanda Muchemwa last week facing a charge of assault.
It was the State’s case as presented by the prosecutor, Mr Jafta Nyikadzinashe that on 19 April at around 1am, Mpengesi met Agent Chitsinde, the police officer at Habane Beer Hall. Mpengesi approached Chitsinde and started shouting at him as to why he had arrested her boyfriend only identified as Nkosi, who had been on the wanted list. It was in the State’s case that despite being approached in an aggressive way, Chitsinde did not respond to Mpengesi’s accusations.
However, little did Chitsinde know that his silence was going to earn him some beating. The court heard that Mpengesi started poking Chitsinde on the forehead with her finger, telling him that she hated him. She then went on to slap him on the face.
The court heard that Chitsinde sustained minor injuries due to the assault. The matter was reported to the police leading to Mpengesi’s arrest.
Asked why she assaulted a police officer, Mpengesi said the sight of Chitsinde reminded her of her boyfriend and the fact that he was was in a beer hall having fun while her boyfriend was in jail made her furious. She pleaded guilty before Mr Muchemwa and was sentenced to pay a fine of $100.
