Get it right: Lifting weights does not make you healthy

The Sunday News

body buildingFOR so long, many people, myself included, have been guided by the conception that in order for one to have a handsomely curved body, one has to “play” around with weights at the gym.
Well that is not always the case, actually, you can look toned and sexy but the outside appearance doesn’t reflect the inside.

We idolise so many celebrities and want to mirror their appearances, but do we actually know what they go through to achieve the look?

Just this past week I came across an article about one of my favourite American rappers, the article was an exclusive insight into his lifestyle, with regards to his health and physical appearance.

The rappers’ secret in a nutshell is to eat healthy, drink lots of water, stay alert, work out (exercise) – something many people are not fond of! – And well playing around with your body and try out new fashion trends.

So I decided to find out from a local gym instructor – Rock Harold – how fashion and health were interlinked?
Observing a motto engraved on Body Works Gym wall, “train like a beast, look like a beauty”, I became aware that for one to ultimately look stylish, while at the same time caring for your health you need not to cut corners.

“Many people that go to the gym look for strength and size and not just strength. It’s not all about size but strength. One has to make sure that when they exercise they go the whole nine yards. There is no point in your body looking good but with no strength,” said Rock.

He said those wishing to look fit and stylish should care for their health while looking sleek.
“You just have to go the whole nine yards. There are no short cuts in this,” he said.

Rock also noted that many people were in the habit of just toning their bodies so that they look good in what they wore.

“People are in the habit of toning their bodies so that they are able to fit in what they want to wear or look good in whatever they want. I have also realised that due to this, men have begun lusting over other men because men are the ones that prefer going to the gym to work on their bodies than women. Women don’t understand what they need to do when they come to the gym. It is rare to find a toned woman in the gym. They prefer to do cardio exercises because they are easier than toning exercises because they can’t endure the strain and pain. In this game we have a motto: No pain No Gain,” he said.

Noting that fashion and health are interlinked, Rock’s message was that people shouldn’t take for granted their health all for the sake of appearing stylish.

“Once you start at the gym you should be consistent. Here we make sure that we condition and assess you in terms of your progress. If you want to look good you have to work it out. It is a fact that if you want to look sleek you have to work on your body,” he said.

I am still deliberating on whether I should start gym, I have of course been to the gym and I know the amount of work needed. Heck, for the sake of my health and also for the sake of style I ought to rejoin.

Feedback:
I really love your article and I have learnt a lot from it. Keep up the good work bro you are a star. We enjoy it as a family. – 0775575277.

Whosoever thinks that yellow bones are beautiful, I can safely say that person is WRONG. It’s just a mentality that exists in guys or let me say boys. Just look at black American ladies and compare them to those so-called yellow bones of ours here, you will see the complexion that catches our eyes but black is beautiful. – 0776122222.

Hi. Your article on yellow bones was thought-provoking and couldn’t have come at a better time. The belief that yellow bones are more beautiful than dark skinned girls is caused by the media, which portrays light skin as being more ideal. Most internationally renowned musicians, actresses, actors and models are light skinned. But there’s more to beauty than one’s skin tone – pretty eyes, a brilliant smile, well balanced facial features, poise and elegance. Our new Miss Zim may be dark but she is stunning. – 0774136020.

Emily is a true African lady; I don’t support people who say negative things about her. – 0774717711.
Hey, being a yellow bone doesn’t mean you are beautiful. Actually I think being dark is more adorable. But I think light skinned people are likely to be affected by the heat more than dark skinned people. We should appreciate dark skinned people.  – 0783204899.

Dark skins are beautiful than yellow bones because they are not full of themselves like yellow bones. They reflect true African colour.  – 0773 586 923
