WHILE the world of music is still mourning the death by suicide of rap heavyweight HHP, it almost got another shock last week after South Africa-based Zimbabwean rapper Gigi Lamayne attempted to take her life for the fourth time.
With the eyes of the world fixed on HHP’s funeral, the rapper who first made her name as Khuli Chana’s sidekick, almost lost her battle against depression and ended up at the Intensive Care Unit of a South African hospital.
Lamayne, sent shockwaves last Sunday after tweeting what seemed like her birthday and what many presumed to be the day that she wanted to end her life.
In the post the rapper, who is now signed to major music label Ambitiouz Entertainment, has talked about her battle with depression, a condition that has led to her trying to take her own life on multiple occasions.
The 24-year-old rapper was discharged from hospital later in the week.
“Thank you to every single one of my friends, industry mates and supporters. I’m sorry to you all. Clearly I’m alive to tell my best story yet. I love you for loving me at this time of weakness. You made me strong. Now I work on myself. Now I love myself,” she said after being discharged.
Through a series of status updates, Lamayne confirmed the suicide attempt and added: “I am living with depression. One day I’ll tell you all about it. I’m thankful to you reading this. I’m thankful to you. Tried to end it. A meltdown of everything around me. I’m sorry I made you hurt and worried, I was just tired. I’ve beeeeen broken.”
Lamayne’s mother, Sara Manney told South Africa’s Daily Sun that the rapper was recovering well.
“This whole thing came as a shock and I have no choice but to be strong,” she said.
The past year has been a particularly tough one for Lamayne both professionally and personally.
She changed record labels, lost a close friend in the form of ProKid, lost her boyfriend Sandile Mkhize and she lost a mentor in HHP.
