FEMALE bodybuilders, Shantel Greenland and Selina Manuel found the going tough at National Amateur Bodybuilders’ Association/ World Fitness Pretoria Classic in South Africa last Saturday where they competed in the bikini model.

Greenland did not place in the over 30 category where she competed against 12 other women. Manuel took sixth spot in the Under-24 section where there were only six competitors. For her efforts, she got herself a medal.

Manuel said she gained a lot of experience and she has to get a lot leaner for her to place higher next time.

“I finished sixth place in the WFF competition in South Africa, I wasn’t aiming for sixth place and I have learnt a lot from this experience, it was awesome being on stage. I think I need to work on being leaner and slightly smaller,’’ Manuel said.

The 19-year-old has plans to compete in South Africa in July with her other competitions being Ms Bulawayo and Ms Zimbabwe later on in the year.

“I am hoping to go back to South Africa soon, maybe in July, I am thinking about the Boksburg Classic, depending on how my physique is. Locally we have Bulawayo coming up in August, hopefully I will be able to stage for that competition,’’ she said.

Greenland described her participation in the show as a good experience since things were conducted in a organised manner.

“I competed in bikini model at the WFF Pretoria Classic last weekend, unfortunately I didn’t make it to the top six but it was a good experience. I had a lot of fun, they were very professional in the way they do things, the backstage managers, they were excellent. I need to work on being a lot leaner because most of the top six girls were very lean and much smaller,’’ Greenland said.

For her, it was a better return to South Africa since the last time she went there, she did not end up getting on stage at Arnold Classic due to a backstage mix up.

“I was glad, I was really honoured to take part in it. It was a really inspiring, different experience altogether from local shows. It was actually really exciting, I am looking forward to doing the next one,’’ she said.

Body Works Gym owner, Nathan Greenland who accompanied the two bodybuilders was delighted with the performance of the duo with plans to send more athletes to similar competitions later on this year.
