MARI G a rapper from Bulawayo has big ambitions to make it big in the hip-hop industry in the country, Africa and eventually the world.

Born 26 years ago as Brian Garikayi Marizani, the ex-Falcon College pupil who was a prefect there says at the age of 16 in 2006, he started penning songs when he was at school.

Mari G said the reason he wanted to be in hip-hop was because he could express his feelings better with the art form.

“When I started doping hip-hop, I was going through a lot in my life. So I saw it as a channel where I could express what I was going through. I didn’t get good grades after completing my A-level at Falcon College and so on,” said Mari G.

He said as with many at the time he left Bulawayo to seek greener pastures in South Africa in 2009.

“I got a job at General Motors, I was a car salesman. Last year after working for sometime in South Africa, I got robbed. I was in Hillbrow going to visit family and out of nowhere these guys came up on me with guns and they took all my documents, passports, work permits, phone and money.

“So when I returned to the country I met my friend Roka J who has a studio Real Music Empire. He said let’s do music together and this is what we’re doing,” said Mari G.

He said he was working on learning how the music business works in the country.

“I’m starting to learn the business in making money off music. It’ll take patience and hard work for me to make it to the top.

However, as I grow as a musician I’d like to work with Cal_Vin and Tehn Diamond, I like their sound and what they’ve achieved,” said Mari G.

He said he has submitted three singles at local radio station Skyz Metro FM and hopes they will be played.

“The tracks I’ve submitted at Skyz are Weekend and The One produced by Dope Boi and Bae produced by Rocka J. Hopefully when I get considerable airplay I can make enough noise nationally.”

Besides being a fulltime musician Mari G is involved in acting as he has drawn from the arts and drama classes at Falcon College to use them in his present life.
