MANICA Diamonds Football Club have agreed one-year deals with the former How Mine pair of centre back Nelson Tachi and midfield dynamo, Thembani “Smaller” Masuku.

The two players’ contracts with How Mine expired on 31 December and they made the switch as free agents to link up with their former coach at the gold miners, Luke “Vahombe” Masomere in the Eastern Highlands.

Manica Diamonds are bankrolled by the country’s sole diamond mining company, the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) and are aiming at winning the Zifa Eastern Region Division One league title and promotion into the Castle Premier Soccer League in their first year of campaigning.

While Masuku was a relative regular under former How Mine coach, Kelvin Kaindu last season, the hugely talented yet underrated Tachi spent most of the season out of the side. Tachi hardly made the squad let alone the starting XI and was largely frustrated under the Zambian. His move to Manicaland will allow him to rebuild his career and hopefully rediscover the form that made him a regular at How Mine.

Tachi said he was excited at the opportunity to play first team football again and was looking forward to the new challenge ahead.

“I am happy that I have joined Manica and I look forward to resuming my career which had come to a standstill at How Mine. I love playing and every time I was left out of the team, I felt like a part of me was being torn off. I am grateful to my new coach, Masomere, for giving me this chance,” Tachi said.

His sentiments were echoed by Masuku who said coming to Manicaland has given him a chance to play on into the twightlight of his career. In the last four seasons, Masuku has been the driving force behind How Mine’s survival and impressive performance in the Premiership. A gutsy and skillful, midfielder, “Smaller” is a born leader who is going to be critical to Manica’s run at promotion.

“I came here to play football to the best of my abilities. I am glad that the coach still thinks I can add value to his team. I signed a one-year deal with the option to extend. So far I am happy with my move and I look forward to the new season,” said Masuku. -@AllanFoti
