Peter Matika How to get stylish
WITH the constant change in weather it has become so much of a cumbersome activity to decide what to wear in the morning. One minute it’s cold the next minute it’s hot . . . it feels as though Mother Nature is playing games with us. Sometime in the middle of the past week, the people of Bulawayo and I assume the rest of the country, woke up to freezing temperatures and obviously had no option but to put on their winter garb.

On the same day the weather dramatically changed, just before lunch time and those heavy, warm jackets and coats had to be put aside.

So the weather has and is confusing a whole lot of people on deciding what to wear, as they are not sure if it will change or not.

I decided to impart a couple of tips on how to stay ahead of the weather and not to be caught unaware.

Naturally, because we are in the cold season, you should be prepared to experience rapid drops in temperature towards the end of the day and of course low temperatures in the morning.

I prepared a few simple and easy to follow steps in deciding what to wear during winter.

Step 1

The first step in beating the weather once you get out of bed in the morning is to take a bath. Bathing is essential in keeping yourself warm, you should always bear in mind that an unhygienic body is prone to germs and is home to lots of bacteria that cause different types of colds and flu.

Step 2

As it should be in everyone’s morning grooming routine, apply lotion, cream or Vaseline to your body to ensure that your skin is well-nourished. Your skin needs to be well kept to prevent it from chapping and it is the first barrier in defending you from the cold.

Step 3

After grooming, if you are not sure of the weather and if you are privileged to have winter garments such as vests, long socks and leggings, wear those as undergarments.

If the sun is shiny but the temperatures slightly chilly, you can get away with wearing a light jacket and not feel cold. These undergarments act as a light blanket over your skin if the temperatures decide to drop. Even in mild chilly weather they are recommended to be worn.

Step 4

If you are really not certain of the weather wear a light jersey or sweater and also carry a jacket with you. Indeed it is annoying to have to walk around carrying a jacket around town while going about your daily routines. If you work in an office then you can as well leave the jacket in the office just as a contingency measure to beat the cold.

Step 5

I know that we are having the soccer World Cup and most men don’t want to catch the excitement from home. It is so much unfortunate that this euphoric event is held in winter and people have to brave the cold. Anyway, if you know that you won’t be home early and have to commute back, carry a coat or a warm jacket to prevent you from freezing.

Step 6

Keep up with winter accessories; they are not just to enhance your outfit but to keep you warm. These are scarves, gloves, woolen hats and of course boots even though I know many men are reluctant to purchase these, as they can easily lose them.

Step 7

Always make sure that the clothes you wear are washed, ironed and clean.

Once you follow these easy steps you will realise that winter is just as ordinary as any other season.

The main and essential step to follow is to keep clean. Many people avoid bathing during this season but it is important to maintain a clean body. Bathing keeps away dirt, germs and bacteria that cause nasty colds and flu. Also while grooming your body make sure to maintain clean-shaven or trimmed body hairs, as they can become home to parasites during winter, especially for those that avoid bathing.

Before ending this piece, I would like to commend and mention how interesting it has been not to notice any people dressed in Christmas tree colours this season. It seems people are indeed more appreciative of their appearance and fashion.
