How to dress for work 2

DRESSING for work is not as easy as many may think, especially if you are not in the fashion sector. People who work in fashion can get away with bold colours, crazy trends and funky hair. Work is a place of professionalism and dressing appropriately is a requirement. One may be a fashion guru at heart but the work environment limits you from showing your fashionista side.

Dressing appropriately for work is good for an individual’s reputation and image. In most cases one doesn’t make it past a job interview simply because of the wrong attire. Appropriate dressing doesn’t mean boring and drab, you can still look stylish and professional in a suit. Look good at work.

Grooming is key.

Gentlemen, keep all facial hair neatly trimmed, so your beard doesn’t become your defining characteristic. Women should not put on crazy hairdos such as big curly over the top weaves. Keep your hair or weave neat, whether a chic pixie cut or a tied back weave, you will look more put-together and ready to shine.

Do not dress too comfortable.

In fashion organisations such as magazines, retail or designing, it’s commonly believed that anything goes. But even in a relaxed office, strive for a look that is comfortable but still sharp. As in any workplace, you will want to inspire confidence in your clients, boss and colleagues. That means not wearing shorts, slippers and crop tops for going out at night. Look professional at all costs.

Wear clean clothes in good repair.

That means inspecting them for any tears, holes, missing buttons, stains or other blemishes that will detract from your appearance. Shoes should be in excellent shape, scuff-free and polished. No toes showing in most environments unless your office is the beach. Lol.

Always dress one step above your client.

Your client may be a cargo shorts and golf shirt kind of person, but if you are their accountant, your dress code will be different. You could easily get by with casual slacks and a cotton shirt, but your ultimate goal is to project an appearance that will put your client at ease regarding your skills.

Cover up.

Whether it’s cleavage, midriffs, legs or strappy little heels, it’s never advisable to bare too much skin at the office, regardless of the season. Strap tops and sheer fabric are always a negative. Men should avoid wearing sandals of any kind.

Don’t be too casual.

Most usually misinterpret business casual or dress down Fridays; it’s not the type of casual outfit you would wear to the club or to a movie. For men, a button-down shirt and khaki pants is the essential business casual. For women, a skirt and blouse, or dress is standard or even pants and tees (depending on the organisation). Men should always have a jacket hanging in the office in case a last-minute meeting comes up.

Outside work you can rock anything of your choice. We won’t be as judgmental!
