SOUTH African singer Zahara has lately been viciously labelled one of the most irresponsible female musicians to emerge from the neighbouring country’s showbiz industry, following animated reports of her “drunken” escapades.

Zahara, whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana, has, however, hit back at the South African media saying they were delusional and out to destroy her.

Zahara, who is said to have been a devout Christian and worship leader at a church in King William’s Town, said she didn’t care about what was said as long as she had her fans backing her.

“They can put as many lies into my name, label me the worst way they can, but they can’t put me down. Ya ll wondering about the Drum article for which I think you my super fans deserve an explanation. Don’t believe everything you read!” she said on a Facebook post recently.

Zahara’s drinking habits and supposed addiction to alcohol, came to light after she was reportedly involved in an accident were her car was totalled a few years ago.

Also rumours of her drinking habits have been allegedly spread by a mechanic – one Carestone Louw – who claims that Zahara took her car to him for repairs, after a night of alleged “binge-drinking”.

It is also alleged that she failed to honour her payments to the mechanic who decided to take to the media to label her a “drunk”.

Zahara defended herself saying the reason she had taken to the bottle was because of the depression she suffered after her brother’s death.

“As I said before I’m fine, in fact more than fine I left the bottles months and months ago after finally getting better from depression of my brother’s death,” she said on a Facebook post.

She also denied claims that she was thrown out of a flight from England because of her addiction to alcohol.

“I wonder who those friends of mine are calling my house a bottle store. As for being ‘thrown out of a flight to England’ REALLY? I never, not once received a SMS or Letter from anywhere about losing my house and car I don’t know where they got it as well.

I think Drum wanted to run my story because it’s the only magazine in SA that didn’t run it month ago but they too late sheim sorry to them!” she added.

She said she was focused on her latest album and was not concerned about the stories in the media.

“I don’t have time for lies and rumours, I’m putting all my time to my third album, which is coming out in September. I have some collaboration you’ll love. Some Tour I’ll be doing,” she said.

Zahara gained popularity through the track Loliwe, which was a hit across Africa.

Her debut album Loliwe went platinum in 13 days and went double platinum after just 17 days, selling over 100 000 copies in South Africa.

In 2012, at the annual South African Music Awards, Zahara won eight awards, including Best Female Artiste and Album of the Year.

Of late, Zahara has also been the subject of debate as well as she has been quoted as having been going through a break up with a radio DJ, who left her because of her drinking habits.
