AFTER snubbing the prestigious National Arts Merit Award (Nama), comedian Clive Chigubhu has said he is not deserting the city despite his dwindling performances in Bulawayo’s showbiz of late.

A sure short rib cracker who is known for his Ye Ye Ye trade mark statement, the high riding meteor said he is venturing into one-man shows around the country, and had not abandoned his roots.

In an interview with Sunday Life, Chigubhu said he had been performing at private functions out of Bulawayo as he is spreading his wings with the hope of targeting a new audience.

“I am not abandoning Bulawayo. This has always been my home and this is where I learnt my comedy skills. I have been getting companies asking me to perform and advertise their products. I think my worth in the comedy industry is now recognised,” he said.

Chigubhu said he is set to launch a comedy club this year, “A Comic called Clive” that would nurture upcoming talent interested in comedy.

Although he is still a performer with Umahlekisa Comedy Club, he said more platforms had to be availed so as to grow comedy in Zimbabwe.

“I will be launching a comedy club as a way of opening up platforms for youths to perform. It may seem I am abandoning Umahlekisa but it’s not like that. I will still perform with them time and again,” said Chigubhu.

With many artistes seeking greener pastures in the capital, Chigubhu said he will not join the bandwagon that has seen most artistes from Bulawayo turning their backs on the city.

“We want to nurture a bigger family and it makes no point for me to abandon Bulawayo when I have gained so much knowledge out of this city. There will be no talking too much this year, but more action this year,” he said.

With the year still at infancy, Chigubhu said his fans should look forward to his upcoming TV show.

“People should look forward to my upcoming TV show this year. I cannot say much about it at the moment, but it will also be accompanied by a DVD,” he said.
