THE Embassy of Japan is working on a programme to bring three artistes to tour and perform in the resort town of Victoria Falls during the Asian country’s Golden week which is anticipated to see an upsurge in tourist arrivals from that country.
The end of April through to 5 May is called “Golden Week” in Japan since there are many national holidays during this period.

Golden Week is the longest vacation period of the year for many Japanese workers and many Japanese take paid time off during this holiday while some companies close completely and give their employees time off.

In an interview on Friday, Second Secretary in the Japanese Embassy in Zimbabwe Mr Masa Lida said the embassy was trying to promote Japanese culture in Zimbabwe and bringing some of their artistes to perform here was one of the ways to do so.

He said the three artistes, Lyco and Kakafuraha musicians, DJ Juri the most respected Japanese female DJ and producer as well as the UEDA Soko tradition grand tea masters were expected to perform in Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo and the Victoria Falls tour coinciding with the Golden week.

“Golden Week is an extremely popular time to travel. Popular destinations are visited during these holidays by huge numbers of Japanese tourists and we anticipate that a lot of our people will be coming into Victoria Falls during this time.

Bringing such a conclusive art endorsement will definitely promote Zimbabwean tourism and make it an attractive destination for the Japanese especially during this period,” said Mr Iida.

The three artistes are expected to perform alongside Jenaguru Jr at the Victoria Falls Rainbow Hotel from 2 -3 May.
In Bulawayo, the artistes will perform during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair week while in Harare it will be at the Harare International Festival of the Arts.

According to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority statistics, at least 20 000 Japanese tourists visit Zimbabwe annually.
The tourism authority has been for some time targeting Japanese tourists as a way of increasing the country’s share of tourists from that country. The Japanese tourist market is a lucrative one as the Asian nationals are big spenders.
